City of Los Angeles Launches Cyberattack Warning Center

The Los Angeles Business Journal has reported that L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the launch of the Los Angeles Cyber Lab, a public-private data-sharing center for alerting local businesses and residents to cyberattacks.

Cyber Lab was formed in partnership with Cisco Systems Inc. of San Jose. The organization will alert small- and medium-sized business partners to attacks in real time and also provide larger businesses with automated updates to their cyberdefense systems.

The city aims to evolve the lab into a platform where private-sector businesses and L.A. residents exchange information about threats. There is no cost or obligation of membership to join the lab.

“The security of our financial, business and personal information depends on aggressive, proactive cyberdefense – and the LA Cyber Lab will help tilt the balance in Angelenos’ favor against evolving threats from criminal hackers,” said Garcetti, in a statement. “L.A. is a leader in this area, because we are constantly sharing information and using new technology to strengthen cybersecurity within city government.”

The city claims it is one of the first in the nation to share its cyberthreat data with the public. The lab’s advisory board was also announced will be led by Mayor Garcetti and Chuck Robbins, chief executive of Cisco Systems.

Other board members include Creative Artists Agency, Dollar Shave Club, Riot Games and Southern California Edison, among others.
